BACOLOD ANGRY CHRIST

Inside the Victorias Milling Company (VMC) compound in Victorias, Negros Occidental, there is a Catholic church unlike any other church in the Philippines, if not in the whole world. Known to negrenses as the St. Joseph the Worker Parish Church.

Sugar baron Miguel Ossorio owner of Victorias Milling Co. (the largest sugar refinery in Asia) built the chapel at the end of World War II to serve the spiritual needs of its employees and their families who are living inside the sugar refinery compound.
His son, Alfonso, painted Christ’s image because he wanted something different. He used commercial paints, which surprisingly lasted, the colors were very much alive until now, despite some natural fading. Strong shades of red, blue, yellow and green extend all the way to the ceiling. It took Alfonso Osorio two years, 1948-1950 to complete this murals.

The VMC chapel became internationally renowned through a Life Magazine article which dubbed it as the “Church of the Angry Christ” because of the mural’s sharp lines and Christ’s depiction as a frowning God

Alfonso Ossorio depicted Jesus Christ (God the Son) with hands laterally-outstretched, being received by God the Father, represented by two giant, red-orange hands.

A descending dove (the Holy Spirit) with multi-colored wings hangs above On the right side you could see the image of Saint Joseph with the Blessed Virgin Mary ( done by local artist Benjamin Valenciano) while at the left side is the image of Saint John the Baptist with Moses.

Fire details in the mural, indicate God’s passionate love.

The Salesian priests of St. John Bosco oversee the parish while at the same time administer the Don Bosco Technical Institute located inside the VMC compound.

The chapel is open to those who wish to visit.

To get there from Bacolod City, take a jeepney or bus that can bring you to the Victorias Milling Company. Upon reaching the gate, a tricycle can take you straight to the chapel.

GUIMARAS

From Deco’s ILOILO, we went to Ortiz Wharf where I bought a ticket from a ticket booth which cost me P 13.00. My new-found ILONGGO friends, habagat central and explore iloilo  then walk me towards the boat located @ the endmost part of the wharf, we said our goodbyes, and I then sat in the boat together with other Guimaras bound passengers.

It was a rocky 15 minutes ride to Guimaras because of the tropical storm Juan that affected Northern, Central Luzon.

In Jordan wharf, I passed by the Tourist Information Center booth by the waiting shed,  tourist have to register here, they will give you suggestions where to go and what to do if you come sort of unprepared. The kind personnel gave me brochures and map of Guimaras, and even helped me with my bags and accompanied me to the Nueva Valencia bound jeepneys, just a few meters from wharfFare from Jordan Wharf to Alubihod is P25.00 per person but they usually asked tourist additional fee of P2.00 =P27.00

The jeepney driver was so kind he dropped me off @ the corner of BUZZ gasoline station and instructed me to ride a trike going to Raymens Beach Resort , fare is P 20.00/ person

My room is called yellow bell 1, a fan room, which can accomodate 1 to 4 persons, with own CR,  for only P 700/ night. I got  a discount of P 100.00 so I paid only P 600.00  It’s near the beach and the billiard area of the resort. It has its own sala, good for barkada bonding. I am quiet disappointed though, with the drainage system of the toilet bowl and the floor drain, it was clogged. Plus they don’t provide towels :-(

Because it was raining, the whole afternoon, I just slept. Yeah, I needed it after our Masskara coverage in Bacolod.  At around 7 p.m. I went out to eat @ the resort’s canteen. I had green Guimaras Mango Shake P 45.00 and Pork Barbecue P 130.00 plus one serving of rice P 15.00 Total bill P 180.00.

I did not able to finish the bbq, so I just instructed them to reheat it the following day for my breakfast and I just pre-order MILO -P 15.00 and RICE P 15.00 = P 30.00. There is a 10% service charge if you want to eat by the beach.

I woke up to a smiling sunshine the next day, so after my hearty breakfast, I went swimming, and snorkeling but the waves are too strong, and I couldn’t see a thing underwater, so I decided to do my Guimaras photo shoot instead and enjoyed it to the max.

I hitched ride to a police patrol car going back to the Jeepney station. I saved P 40.00 -cost of trike from Raymen’s to the jeepney station.

The Jordan Wharf bound jeepney cost me only   P25.00

Jordan Wharf to Ortiz wharf in Iloilo cost me only P 13.00

Total Guimaras experience P 906.00 ONLY!!!! ( complete with meals, overnight accomodation, transport to and from Iloilo. Pictures to follow, blogger is doing maintenance as of the moment.

Enjoy Guimaras!!!!

AMANPULO

AMANPULO PALAWAN PHILIPPINES- So near and yet so far! Ordinary mortals like you and me could only dream staying in this place which they described as

A private island, where sea and sky meet as one, where velvet white sand is caressed by the lap of crystal water, where palms bow to vermillion bougainvillea in tropically kissed vegetation, where nature’s hand streaks the sun’s iridescences on its unbridled canvas, where night skies are admired beside the crackle of a ‘tepee’ beach fire, where sleep is submerged in pristine white, where luxury is defined by its earth-given beauty, where peace embraces its island host. This place is Amanpulo, in thePhilippines, a realisation of a dream.

My Lucky friend L is a living testimony that nothing is really impossible in this world! Here is some of her snapshots in AMANPULO…

OH WHAT A LOVELY VIEW OF THE BEACH!! THE PHILIPPINES IS REALLY BLESSED!
Amanpulo rests on the Pamalican Island, about 360 kilometers southwest of Manila. Seven square kilometers of reef surround the island.
She took this photo on board a chartered plane that took them to AMANPULO PALAWAN from MANILA.  Guests fly directly to Pamalican Island in a 19-seat, twin engine turboprop, landing at the resort’s private airstrip. Flight time is one hour.
Dry Season usually runs from November to May and the wet season with scattered rain showers from June until October.

You have a view of the ocean when you eat here.  Special credits to L Thanks for the wonderful pictures and story! If not for your photos and first hand experience I would not be able to come up with this article my dear friend L.
